Constipation Type 1

Constipation Type 1 is an isolated constipation event. This individual is rarely constipated.

Common Causes:

Recent Surgery (anesthesia and pain medications) Travel

A dramatic change in diet

Immobility

This type of constipation may be intense but it is typically short-lived. It would be wise to be prepared for situational constipation before any surgical procedure. Anesthesia and pain medications both contribute to constipation. Then, add the fact that you are less mobile during your recovery.

There are 2 subtypes of constipation type 1.

Type 1A (Acute) Constipation

This patient is extremely uncomfortable and desires immediate relief. Bisacodyl (Dulcolax) suppository- insert 1 rectally as directed. Wait 20 minutes, then follow with warmed (run under warm tap water) saline enema (eg. FLEET). Within 5-10 minutes, the individual should experience a significant bowel movement. This may be accompanied by severe cramping which is typically short lived. Most individuals report an intense sensation followed by extreme relief.

Magnesium citrate taken every night would likely save you from the extremely uncomfortable Type 1a constipation

Type 1B Constipation

This is available in powder, capsule and liquid form. Double the recommended dosage for optimal results. (Be sure to consider location and schedule as when the urge hits (3-8hrs), you want to be home or at the very least near a toilet.
